Il Palazzo
"Santa Croce"
The Palace is built on several levels and is included in the curtain of medieval buildings. It represents an important example of 13th-15th century urban aristocratic architecture, with an entrance door with a pointed arch, framed by a small ashlar-worked cornice, an internal courtyard and monumental staircase. Archival sources show that the palace originally belonged to a noble family already present in Barletta at the time of the Normans, the Santacroce, hence the building’s name.
It was Charles I of Anjou who donated it as a sign of gratitude to Filippo Santacroce, his supporter and member of the Privy Council. In addition to its exceptional architectural beauty, the building is of great historical interest. Indeed, other personalities who have stayed here include: Ferdinand I of Aragon during his coronation in Barletta in 1459 and later sovereigns from the French period of the Kingdom of Naples, Joseph Bonaparte (1807) and Joachim Murat (1813).
